Best of 2014 in Style

Last year I thought Jennifer Lawrence, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and Harry Styles were among the best dressed people in 2013. This year I couldn’t really decide, so I picked five, rather than three people who I think dressed very well in 2014.

Blake Lively
Former Gossip Girl star and lifestyle-entrepeneur Blake Lively has been known for her great personal style for years now, but she stepped up her game during the Cannes film festival, where she (and husband Ryan Reynolds) turned hats in one beautiful Gucci gown after another. She truely stood out though for her pregnancy style later in the year. When she arrived in a white, skintight gown at a charity event, some dared to call it the best pregnancy gown ever.

Lupita Nyong’o
Not only did Kenyan 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o sweep award season, she also captured the hearts of the fashion crowd. Her breakthrough moment was at the Golden Globes when she wore a dark orange, caped Ralph Lauren gown, but her best moment came at the Oscars. She wore a beautiful pale blue, custom Prada gown and looked every inch the winner.

Jared Leto
Much like Lupita Nyong’o, Jared Leto sweeped award season very stylishly. As Ellen Degeneres joked in her monologue, Jared Leto was the most beautiful guest at the Academy Awards. Often wearing Saint Laurent and Balmain, known for their rock-ish clothing, Jared Leto’s style is quite similar to last year’s best dressed lister Harry Styles. Among my favourite outfits are Leto’s Golden Globe look, including black silk scarf, and the time he wore zebra printed trousers at Coachella.

Amal Clooney
Top human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin married George Clooney back in September. She was at the centre of the world’s attention and in a few days time she proved a spot on this list was rightfully hers. The beautiful post-wedding Giambattista Valli haute couture dress and of course the actual wedding gown from the late Oscar de la Renta were simply breathtaking.

Eddie Redmayne
In recent months Redmayne has come to the centre of award attention for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, meaning that he has had to show up at event after event in beautiful (coloured) suits. Often wearing labels such as Burberry and Alexander McQueen, he is starting to become an embassador for British tailoring. The actual award shows haven’t started just yet, so I suppose the best has yet to come.

Honourable mentions go to…
- Jennifer Lawrence who is still rocking Dior at award shows and Hunger Games premieres.
- Emma Watson who took a big risk at the Golden Globes in a pant-gown combination and looked both stunning and strong in a Dior coat during her much spoken about UN speech.
- Cate Blanchett who was a true Hollywood star when she picked up every single award there is in beautiful gowns from Lanvin, Givenchy and most importantly Armani Privé.
