Best Of 2013: Music

Christmas is over, which means we're now leading up to New Year's Eve. Traditionally the time to make lists, as I have done too in the past. I will kick of my Best Of 2013... series with the music category!

I thought this year was a great year for music. I have enjoyed many great songs and albums this year. On top of every music list this year should be Lorde I think. Her smash hit Royals and debut album Pure Heroine for me are easily the best and among the most enjoyable of the year. I remember hearing Royals for the first time and being struck by that beat and the fantastic lyrics. I've been addicted ever since. Besides Lorde's Royals on my absolute no. 1, here are my ten runners-up in no particular order:

Sara Bareilles - Brave ... I didn't actually hear it until the Roar-sounds-a-lot-like-Brave controversy, but immediately liked it so much! From Sara's Album of the Year nominated The Blessed Unrest Lady Gaga ft. R. Kelly - Do What U Want ... way better than Artpop's first single Applause! Katy Perry - Roar ... although I liked Sara's Brave more than Katy's Roar, it still is in this list. Imagine Dragons - On Top of the World ... actually all of Imagine Dragons' song could end up in this list. Kodaline - High Hopes ... went to a concert just a few weeks ago and that's when I discovered this band as well as one of my personal favourites of them. Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball ... never in a million years could I have imagined that Miley Cyrus would end up on this list. I really do like Wrecking Ball (and it's controversial video) though. Imagine Dragons - Demons ... see former Imagine Dragons comment. Janelle Monáe - Q.U.E.E.N. ... I don't think I have listened this song that often, but anyone as talented as Janelle just deserves to be mentioned. Lorde - Tennis Court ... after her amazing Royals I was afraid her album would fell flat, but in fact it just is a collection of fantastic songs. Robin Thicke ft. TI & Pharell - Blurred Lines ... I don't think there's anyone who didn't enjoy this year's biggest hit.

You'll find my five favourite albums of the year after the break

After seeing the list of songs I liked the most you can already predict four of my five favourite albums of the year. Here they are in no particular order.

Sara Bareilles - The Blessed Unrest
Obviously I wasn't the only one who enjoyed The Blessed Unrest. Sara scored an Album of the Year Grammy nom. It is highly unlikely she will win, but from those five nominated, this actually is my favourite. Besides Brave I especially like Little Black Dress, Manhattan and I Choose You (which you can find below).

Lady Gaga - ARTPOP
Despite underwhelming critically as well as commercially, Lady Gaga's ARTPOP is one of my favourite albums of the year. I am glad she moved away from her Born This Way path and produced a number of great poppy songs. My personal favourites? Dope, Man!cure, Sexxx Dreams and hopefully soon to be super smash hit Gypsy (which you can find below).

Kodaline - In A Perfect World
My sister asked me to go to a Kodaline concert with her. I said yes and ended up discovering one of my favourite albums of the year. Please just listen! Besides High Hopes title track In A Perfect World probably is my favourite.

Lorde - Pure Heroine
Pure Heroine is pure gold. Singles Royals and Tennis Court are great (you can find them below) but I think 400 Lux, with a beat quite similar to that one from Royals, is very, very nice too.

Beyonce - Beyonce
The world went crazy when Beyonce dropped her album without the slightest warning. She sold hundreds of thousands of copies in just days and for a reason. Beyonce produced a very good and different-from-the-usual album.

Please do share your opinions! What are your favourite songs and albums of the year?
